Google’s former CEO is launching his own private Hubble telescope. Eric Schmidt is dropping hundreds of millions to build a space telescope to rival NASA’s. Schmidt’s private observatory will hunt for life on distant planets and try to unravel space mysteries, like why dark energy is causing the universe to expand faster and faster. Big astronomy has been US government territory since WWII. Not everyone loves the idea of private money steering it, but Schmidt promises all the data will be freely available. Researchers are starting to treat these models less like code and more like mysterious organisms. They’re carefully tracing internal signals and monitoring odd behaviors. The goal isn’t to understand every detail, it’s to catch unpredictable patterns and troubling habits before the models evolve even weirder behaviors.
